Guilt and shame come afterward. To deal with these feelings, teens with bulimia try to compensate for the binge. Often, they vomit. But they may use other methods. They may exercise too much, abuse laxatives or weight-loss medicine, or fast. They may lose or gain weight.

The DSM-V reports that during a given year, 1 to 1.5 percent of young females will suffer from bulimia. They also report that, like anorexia, females in treatment for bulimia outnumber males ten to one.

Bulimia is dangerous. Constant vomiting can cause problems in the digestive system. Problems in a person’s mineral balance can even lead to heart attacks or strokes. Teens may be starving, which brings the same risks as does anorexia.
